Highlighting Our Wellness Center in Honor of National Physical Therapy Month
October is National Physical Therapy Month, which was established in 1981 by the American Physical Therapy Association. This annual health observance serves two purposes: to celebrate and appreciate all the hard work and dedication of all physical therapists and PT students and to remind the public about the benefits of physical therapy and how it can improve health and quality of life.
As a retirement living community in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee, Uplands Village prioritizes senior health and wellness. On our campus, we have a large Wellness Center that offers physical therapy and rehabilitation services so individuals can focus on wellness and recovery. In honor of National Physical Therapy Month, we’re sharing some information about the benefits of physical therapy and how to focus on health in our Wellness Center.
Explore the Benefits of Physical Therapy
Physical therapy can benefit just about anyone of any age, background, and physical condition. For example, it can be used by a toddler who is behind in development; it can be used by an elite skier after an ACL tear, and older adults can use it to recover from and prevent injuries.
According to a 2016 study by the CDC, more than 28% of adults over 50 are physically inactive. Living a sedentary life can cause a multitude of health problems, including a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes, dementia, and depression. Not surprisingly, the rate of inactive adults was even higher in those with chronic illnesses, which is where physical therapy can come into play.
Physical therapy can help those with or without chronic conditions incorporate more movement into their life, as well as:
- Improve/restore movement or function
- Manage pain
- Reduce the symptoms associated with chronic illness
- Improve balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls
- Manage arthritis or osteoporosis
Physical therapy also has recognized benefits of helping individuals regain mobility, functioning, and strength after a hospitalization or a major health crisis, such as a stroke.

Each day, our rehab guests work with our professional and compassionate physical therapists in our therapy gym to achieve their personal goals. Our Wellness Center also has a full kitchen and bath so our guests can learn how to navigate their home and other environments safely.
